"The place was not there before the tree, but came into being with it. And for those who are gathered there, the prospects it affords, which is to be had nowhere else, is what gives it its particular character and identity... In its present form, the tree embodies the entire history of its development from the moment it first took root. And that history consists in the unfolding of its relations with manifold components of its environment, including the people who have nurtured it,... The people in other words, are as much bound up in the life of the tree as is the tree in the lives of the people, the tree has manifestly grown within living memory. Thus its temporality is more consonant with that of human dwelling."

In the first stage of this phase, with the empty plot on Acklam Road in mind I made a stand to display a lenticular 'flip' image which simultaneously revealed the plot without a tree and the plot with the tree, this explored a number of ideas.
  • Firstly, I have never seen (or perhaps registered) a tree being planted on our streets, they seem instead to appear from nowhere.
  • Secondly, This reinforces views about seeing and not noticing trees on our streets.
  • Thirdly, this allows a preview to what is happening with this plot.
  • Finally, and perhaps most importanly it invites an interaction and aknowledgement with the site that previously did not exist.

On the other side of the stand I displayed images that I had previously taken of work in and around the area, filling the gap between tree and no tree.

With the help of those who come to Acklam Road we planted an older Sorbus Joseph Rock. Some came specifically on that day to help whilst others joined in who were there anyway. As the day progressed it became clear how important the involvment and interaction with site, tree and people had become. The tree became known as "he, she, Jo, Kestral (after the beer), Jesse, your baby..." this gave way to an incredible sense of belonging "we ain't gonna let anything happen to him".

Although the physical project work here was coming to an end the potential for new journeys and growth had been set in place. The site becoming a foundation - the roots for futher work.

On the stake that supports the tree is the address www.s-tree-t.co.uk this works to identify more plots that have stumps, broken trees or that are simply empty.

My first new discovery was on the way to the garden centre for project supplies. A journey I would not normally take reveals a tree stump on Birchen Grove. Since then five more sites have been identified through this project producing a tree like growth from my first, once empty, street tree plot on Acklam Road.
